Time-to-Listing Chart
Just How Long Do They Take?
These charts show how long it may take for your
site to be listed after you have submitted it to the
search engines or directories.
Chart current as of 11/2001
Engine |
Time To Listing |
AltaVista |
Usually
lists within 4-6 weeks. Also offers a paid
Express service through infoSpider and
Trusted Feed. |
Hot Bot
(Inktomi) |
Usually lists
within 6-8 weeks, but you may have to
resubmit. Hot Bot drops pages if you do not
get a significant amount of click-thrus after
they list you. The best way into HotBot is
through the paid process with Position
Technologies. http://positiontech.com
If you pay the fee expect to be listed
within just a few days. It's a recommended
buy. But be aware that the engines Inktomi
services will update their listings at
differing times.
|
Excite |
10-12 weeks or
possibly never. This is one of the slower
engines on the Internet. |
Google |
Expect to be
listed within 4 -6 weeks. The Google spider
is very active, and this is an excellent
search engine. If you want immediate
listings, don't forget about their AdWords
program. You can get started for a minimal
fee.
|
Northern Light |
Your listing will
usually appear in 3 to 6 weeks. It's a fairly
good engine, and they are very responsive. |
Direct Hit |
Having a fairly good response
rate, you should show up in Direct Hit within
two weeks. Rankings will suffer, however,
without click thrus. |
Webcrawler |
Don't hold your
breath. While WebCrawler is still a good
engine, they hardly ever update their index. |
GoTo.com
aka Overture |
A paid service. You can
expect a turn around time of 1-3 days.
Excellent! Also, if you pay for the top
three rankings you can expect to show up on
many other cooperating engines.
|
Lycos |
Takes anywhere from 6 - 9
weeks. Check back frequently. They have a
reputation for being slow to update. |
Directory |
Time To Listing |
Yahoo |
For free
submission, 2 days to 1 month to never.
The most popular search tool on the web is
also the most difficult to get listed in. For
faster service, go with their Express Submit
service which guarantees a review of your
site within 48 hours.
Pricing is currently $299.
|
Open Directory |
Generally comes
through in about 2 weeks IF your chosen
category has a volunteer Editor. Again, these
folks are doing an excellent job. |
About.com |
You'll
have to convince an About.com Guide that your
site is worth listing, and this can be no
small task. But should they decide to list
you, you can expect an immediate update. IMHO,
About.com is one of the best directories on
the net.
|
LookSmart |
Now a pay for
listing only service. For $299 an editor will
review your site within 48 hours. For $99 an
editor will review your site within 8 weeks.
You can also submit sub listings. HOME
